Ex-Showroom vs On-Road Price: What You Actually Pay
Car advertisements in India always advertise the "Ex-Showroom Price," but the real amount required to drive the car out of the showroom (the On-Road Price) is typically 15% to 25% higher due to state taxes, insurance, and compliance fees.
🏷️ State RTO Road Tax Differences
Road tax is levied by individual state governments and varies substantially across India:
- Karnataka: Imposes the highest road tax in India (14% to 17% for petrol/diesel cars).
- Maharashtra: Charges 11% to 13% based on engine displacement and fuel type.
- Delhi & NCR: Ranges from 7% to 10% for petrol cars, with zero or heavily discounted road tax on Electric Vehicles (EVs).
- Gujarat: Levies a flat 6% road tax for private individual registrations.
⚖️ What is 1% TCS under Section 206C(1F)?
Under Section 206C(1F) of the Income Tax Act, any motor vehicle purchased with an ex-showroom price exceeding ₹10,00,000 attracts an automatic 1% Tax Collected at Source (TCS).
This 1% TCS is collected by the dealership and deposited directly against your PAN card with the Income Tax Department. You can claim full credit or refund for this TCS amount when filing your annual ITR.

Under RBI directives, banks cannot charge prepayment or foreclosure penalties on floating-rate individual loans.
