Frequently Asked Questions (Post Office MIS)
How is the POMIS monthly interest calculated? ▼
The monthly interest is calculated using simple interest on the invested principal: (Principal × 7.40%) ÷ 12. For example, for an investment of ₹9,00,000, annual interest is ₹66,600, yielding exactly ₹5,550 credited directly to your bank account every month.
Can an individual hold multiple POMIS accounts? ▼
Yes, an individual can open multiple accounts across various post offices in India, but the aggregate principal across all single accounts and his/her equal share in joint accounts cannot exceed ₹9 Lakh.
Is TDS deducted from POMIS interest? ▼
No TDS (Tax Deducted at Source) is deducted by the Department of Posts. However, the interest earned is fully taxable under "Income from Other Sources" and must be declared in your annual Income Tax Return (ITR) at your applicable income slab rate.
What happens if the monthly interest is not withdrawn? ▼
Interest that remains unwithdrawn in the POMIS account does not earn any additional interest. It is highly recommended to set up an auto-credit mandate to your Post Office Savings Account (POSA) or commercial bank account, from which you can set up a recurring deposit (RD) or mutual fund SIP to compound your earnings.
